Definition
The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model in astrophysics for the universe's origin and evolution.
It posits that the universe began roughly 13.8 billion years ago from a state of extremely high density and temperature, and has been expanding and cooling ever since (even today). This scientific theory states that all matter, energy, and space originated from a singular point (a so called Singularity), leading to the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets. In essence, the Big Bang marks the beginning of the observable universe's evolution as we know it.
Supporting Evidence
This expansion is supported by the Hubble-Lemaître law, which observes distant galaxies receding from us at faster speeds proportional to their distance.
Another real-world example of evidence supporting the Big Bang theory is the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). CMBR is the afterglow of the initial explosion, still detectable and uniformly present throughout the universe. This radiation provides a snapshot of the infant universe, allowing scientists to confirm and refine the Big Bang model.
Analogy
You could imagine the Big Bang as an inflating balloon. As the balloon expands (universe), the dots painted on its surface (galaxies) move further apart from each other, even though they're not moving on the balloon itself (fabric of spacetime). This expansion is the phenomenon that the Big Bang theory describes.
