Meaning
In cosmology, a singularity represents a point in space-time where standard physical laws cease to function, and measurable quantities such as spacetime curvature and matter density become infinite. Thus, it is envisioned as a point of infinite density and temperature.
A cosmological singularity is often associated with the Big Bang, the theoretical inception of the universe, where it is postulated that all matter, energy, space, and time were condensed into an infinitely small point. This singularity marks the beginning of the universe as understood by the Big Bang model, where space itself expands from this initial state of infinite density.
Such singularities are not directly observable but are inferred from mathematical models and indirect observations like cosmic microwave background radiation.
However, singularities pose a significant challenge in the realm of Quantum Physics. Since an infinite quantity cannot occur in our understanding of Nature, singularities are not considered real by scientists. Instead, when theories predict a singularity, scientists take it to mean that the theory has been extended beyond its applicability.
Details
The cosmological singularity, which is the state the universe was in at the very beginning of the Big Bang, was unimaginably hot. Temperatures are estimated to have reached around 1032 Kelvin (100 million trillion trillion degrees). This was a period where the universe was extremely dense and all four fundamental forces of nature (gravity, electromagnetism, strong nuclear force, and weak nuclear force) were unified. It was a very brief moment, but it set the stage for everything that followed, including the rapid expansion and cooling that led to the formation of matter as we know it.
Black Hole
The term Singularity is also used for the theoretical point within a black hole, where gravitational forces cause matter to be infinitely dense and where spacetime curvature becomes infinite. Any object that falls into the black hole will eventually reach this singularity. At the singularity, the gravitational field becomes infinitely strong and rips apart spacetime itself.
The concept of 'Black Hole' too signifies a breakdown in our current understanding of physics as traditional laws in physics cannot describe such extreme conditions.
Analogy
Imagine dividing a number by zero. As the number you divide by, approaches zero, the answer theoretically becomes infinitely large.
A cosmological singularity is similar - it is a point where our usual equations (like general relativity) break down due to extreme conditions, like dividing by zero mathematically.
It's important to remember this is a limitation of our knowledge, not necessarily a physical characteristic of the universe itself.
