🔍Realistic Predictions and Feasibility

 Technical Obstacles

- Radiation: Mars lacks a magnetic field. Cosmic rays can damage human DNA.
- Atmosphere: Mars has 1% of Earth’s air pressure. No breathable air.
- Gravity: Mars has 38% of Earth’s gravity. Long-term effects on health are unknown.
- Food and water: Food should be grown in underground, lit greenhouses and water should be sourced locally (e.g. from ice).

Financial Investments

💰 Cost Aspect:

- NASA’s Artemis Program (Moon base): ~$93 billion by 2025 (NASA, 2022).
- SpaceX Starship (Mars transport): ~$10 billion development cost (SpaceX, 2024).
- Estimated cost to send 1 person to Mars: $500,000–$1 million.

Time Frame of Development

- Moon base: 2030s (NASA).
- First Mars crew: 2035–2040 (NASA, ESA).
- Mass migration: Not before 2100, if ever.

🧪 MOXIE on Mars

NASA’s MOXIE experiment (2021–2023) turned carbon dioxide from Mars’ atmosphere into oxygen. It produced 12 grams/hour—enough for one person to breathe for 10 minutes.
(MOXIE stands for: Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment.)

Why it matters: It proves that in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) is possible. But scaling it up for thousands of people is still science fiction.

Real-World Example: Mars

🌱 Mars is the top candidate for terraforming:
- It’s close to Earth (6–9 months travel).
- It has CO₂ for atmosphere building.
- It has frozen water at the poles.
- It has seasons and it has day/night cycles similar to Earth (a 24.6-hour day).

But it also has big challenges:
- No magnetic field.
- Low gravity.
- Thin atmosphere.
- Harsh radiation.

Mars lacks a magnetic field and it has low gravity. This makes long-term atmosphere retention difficult on Mars. Still, Mars gives us a testbed for learning how to live beyond Earth.
