Cosmogenesis
How did life arise from the silent darkness of the universe? The journey begins with the Big Bang, the explosive birth of space and time itself. From this moment of cosmogenesis, the universe expanded, cooled, and forged the elements that would one day form stars, planets, and—eventually—life.
Biogenesis
On our young Earth, about 4 billion years ago, the stage was set for biogenesis: the transition from non-living chemistry to the first living systems. Scientists imagine a restless world of oceans, volcanic heat, and lightning storms, where simple molecules collided and combined. Out of this chaos, molecular patterns began to emerge.
Cybernetics
These patterns are often described as self-organizing systems—networks of molecules that spontaneously arranged themselves into more complex forms. Here, the principles of cybernetics (feedback, regulation, and communication) played a role:
Chemical reactions may have begun to repeat cause-effect sequences that sustained their fabric. This led to self-replication, one of the first conditions for the expressing of viable organisms.
Autopoiesis
Eventually, conditions became autopoietic—self-maintaining. Primitive protocells formed fragile boundaries, captured energy, and reproduced. From these humble beginnings, the first true cells arose, setting in motion the long story of biological evolution.
