Intrinsic Perception of Patterns

 

Take a look at a human face that most people perceive as beautiful, for example, movie stars on TV. Pay particular attention to the geometric figures, the symmetry, the repetition of lines, and matching shapes on the face. Examine the appearance from the front (French: En Face) and from the side (En Profil). Observe the contours and patterns of facial features, but also the whole of the parts. The whole is also called ‘Face Gestalt’.

It is helpful to examine a real (living) face. However, photos in glossy magazines can also be enlightening; for they are often ‘polished’ to primarily show what the average person finds beautiful.
Which lines, shapes, and forms does the average person find the most beautiful?
Which facial patterns catch your attention?
You might want to look at the face through the slits of your eyelashes to see which lines or shapes stand out most.
Do you see planes that are in a certain relationship to one another?
Take a look at a beautiful face in the twilight.
Or examine the shape lines, contours, and patterns when light falls on the face from a certain angle.
Do you see pattern repetition?

Study a large image up close for a while without moving your eyes. Close your eyes and look (with your eyes closed) at the afterimage in your mind. Which lines or shapes linger for a moment or ‘glow’ in your immediate memory?
It is possible that you see nothing at first, because our brain automatically corrects for spots and other artifacts in our perceptions.

Observe a face from multiple viewing angles (with eyes open) and immediately examine the afterimages (with eyes closed).
Do you see geometric figures in the afterimages?

An afterimage can be an afterimage spot in your eyes from a strong light source that you looked into just moments before.
